Use of Force and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office

There has been much reported on police shootings in Jacksonville and the type of force used by the police. Here is the law in Florida as it relates to force used by police in Florida:

A police officer is justified in the use of ANY force he believes is necessary to defend himself or someone else from harm WHILE making an arrest. That force is also justifiable when
1. retaking an escaped felon or
2. arresting a fleeing felon
The use of force by a police officer is NOT justified if
1. it was based on an illegal arrest and
2. the police officer knows it is illegal
