The Department of Justice (Department) claims that trafficking in cocaine is the largest drug threat to America in its most recent National Drug Threat Assessment.
According to the report, Columbia remains the biggest supplier of coca cultivation in the world. Cocaine availability went down in 2007 and early 2008 because of a crack-down in production in the country, leading to shortages in U.S. drug markets. The Department believes that the shortages in cocaine availability will continue into 2009, but demand will stay high.
