The jail located in Downtown Jacksonville is called the Pretrial Detention Facility. The jail employs 686 corrections officers and other personnel. The 12 story facility was opened in 1991 and houses a maximum of 2189 inmates.
The inmates cannot smoke, there is no coffee, and no television. The inmates do get to play basketball at recreation time. Inmates can become a “Trusty”, which gives them access to different parts of the jail to perform work duties. Becoming a Trusty can allow the inmate to earn “gain time”, which reduces the time they are incarcerated.
