Police officers all over Florida, especially in Jacksonville, participate in “knock and talk”. An officer will knock on your door and attempt to gather information and get consent to search your house. In Florida courts, this is considered a consensual encounter, which means the police can do this to any house without having a warrant or a reason.
If JSO comes to your house and asks for your “consent to search” your house without a warrant, you are absolutely entitled to tell them “NO” and ask them to leave your property. You do NOT have to answer any questions and you do NOT have to let them in your home without a search warrant.
